Why Will My Baby Not Sleep?

March 10, 2025

Ever wonder “why will my baby not sleep?” It is often one of the biggest struggles we suffer from as parents. So I’ve asked an expert for one tip to help!

Are you a tired Mom?

Possibly at your wit’s end and will do anything to get your child to sleep? I’m Nicole Gonzalez from Tiny Transitions, and we wholeheartedly believe that healthy sleep habits help to create happy, healthy and active children.

Though, establishing good sleep habits isn’t just about bedtimes or length of naps (although we know those are important, too). It is also about developing positive behaviors that your child will use for a lifetime. We know that sleep doesn’t just restore the body. It also aids in brain development, so it’s imperative that you lay the groundwork for restful sleep right from the start.

Prevent your child from becoming overtired.

A large component of sleep woes begin from your little one being overtired. You may not even be aware of it! Preventing over-tiredness is a particularly important step in building a solid foundation for creating a rock star sleeper.

Many parents are surprised at the amount of sleep their child needs and how quickly a baby will become overtired. The chart below summarizes the recommended number of awake hours, in between naps (by age group).

AGEAVERAGE AWAKE TIME
Newborns (0-12 weeks)45-60 minutes
3-5 months1.5-2 hours
6-8 months2-3 hours
9-12 months3-4 hours
13 months-2.5 years5-6 hours

If you prevent your child from being overtired, your little one will fall asleep easier and will sleep longer.

DON’T WAIT FOR YOUR BABY TO SHOW SIGNS THAT THEY ARE SLEEPY!

Generally by the time your child is rubbing their eyes or getting a little grumpy, they are already overtired.

This, of course, isn’t the ONLY component to establishing a rock star sleeper. But, if you follow these awake times, you are beginning your journey to a tranquil household and having a well-rested, happy, and active child.
